Jericho—the Backstory

The story of the battle of Jericho teaches us a lot about believing in God and taking Him at His Word.

Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside (straitly) due to their fear of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in.

My question to Jesus as I studied this was,” so they were “hiding” inside what was considered their fortified city as if you couldn’t get to them, after they plundered and pillaged villages?! Isn’t that what cowards do—hit you and then run and hide?

Jericho had heard of the wonders and defeats to which the God of the Israelites had performed many times, to deliver His people out of the hands of their enemies, and they knew that if the people of God showed up in a battle, their God would also be with them and give them victory!!

So the enemies of Israel hid themselves within the “fortified” walls of Jericho. Perhaps they had not realized that if God had made a way through the red sea, for His people, then there wasn’t a hiding place that He could not penetrate!

NOTE: Jesus Christ won victory over death, hell, and the grave; and now in the new birth—we are now God’s spiritual Israel! He will do the same for us in salvation.

NOW…

Jericho was one of the first walled cities in the world at that time, and evil men from that city, would go on raids to neighboring areas, to pillage and plunder, then return to this seemingly impenetrable city, with its strong walls and defenses.

Since the fall of man beginning in the Garden of Eden, even till now, tyrants have sprung up on the earth, to ruthlessly rule their fellow man, enriching themselves, stealing, murdering, lying, destroying.

There is a day coming when God will intervene and usher in His Kingdom, where righteousness and joy in the presence of God will be the only way of life!

And “Jehovah” said unto Joshua, “see, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.

The inhabitants of Jericho were extremely violent, murderous, and idolatrous. God knew that there was sin in that camp! So He proceeded to dismantle and give it to His people.

After the Israelites crossed over into the promised land, “the Lord” instructed them to “destroy” the city of Jericho and “everything” in it. One of the Israelites, named Achan ‘took items’ from Jericho that were forbidden. Joshua’s instructions were to destroy the entire city.

Jericho’s sin was terrible! It was the sin of “using God's good gifts for one's self, and in the service of idols,” rather than for the glory of God; and that sin, basically repeated itself in the heart of Achan.

God commanded Joshua to go around the walls of Jericho once every day for six days, and on the seventh day, seven times. God commanded the city to be attacked by seven priests blowing horns, with the “Ark of the Covenant, in front of them and all the people behind the Ark.

Take it!

Jericho was the first city as part of the “promised land,” that God had given them, but they had to “take it,” and trust that God knew what He was doing! (we must not lean to our own understanding about anything) The people had murmured and complained prior, but Joshua and Caleb stilled the people…

God however, does not let unbelievers (even those who masquerade as believers), and mockers stop His will or purpose. Neither should you!!

He has promised those who “believe” in Him and trust His directions; enough to be obedient to them—a land that would continuously flow with milk and honey (blessings provisions and abundance)!

He uses His Word, the scriptures—to speak to us and show us how we ought to live. We must then hide His word in our heart, so that we might not sin against Him.

God had given Joshua very specific instructions on what to do, to cause the walls of Jericho to collapse, so that His people could defeat Jericho and claim the city. His specific instructions were, “six days march around the city saying nothing and then on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

As soon as they heard the blast of the shofars, they were to raise a massive shout of jubilee like a thunderclap, and immediately, the thick walls of Jericho collapsed! Everyone rushed straight ahead and captured the city.
