Our study concerns assignments—Paul’s Assignment in the Corinthian Church!
In Corinth, Paul warns against divisions within the church and emphasizes the importance of unity among church members. He warns members against sexual immorality, admonishes that the body is a temple for the Holy Spirit, and encourages self-discipline. He covered a number of different issues related to both life and doctrine: divisions and quarrels, lawsuits among believers, marriage and singleness, freedom in Christ, order in worship, the significance of the Lord's Supper, and the right administration of the spirit.
The Corinthian church was corroded with sin on a variety of fronts, so Paul provided an important model for how the church should handle the problem of sin in its midst. Rather than turn a blind eye toward relational division and all kinds of immorality, he addressed the problems head-on. In his bold call to purity within the Corinthian church, Paul made it clear that he was willing to risk the good opinion of some in order to help cleanse the sin that tainted the church.
Paul preached in the synagogues to the religious community, (Jews and the Greeks), who were in leadership positions. Every sabbath, it seems that he was always “reasoning”🙄 and attempting to persuade them; and when they opposed his messages, and spoke irreverently about God and His sacred things, (blasphemy) Paul grabbed his coat and said unto them, “your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles. Paul then, left there…
Then the Lord spoke to Paul in the night, by a vision:
“be not afraid, but speak and “hold not your peace;” for I am with you, and no man will “attack or hurt you",” for I have many other people in your city that you must speak to. (Acts 18: 9-10)
i.e…“keep declaring and decreeing, even when they want to hear it and also when they don’t want to hear my truth— shake the dust, (depart in a hurry, especially from any unpleasant situation; or leave forever), and go to somebody else…for there are too many others, that need the truth of the word of God; they must hear real truth, and not fables, so that they can be made whole. Paul’s answer makes clear that their reactions involved putting tradition or their own desires ahead of serving Jesus.
